Servings: 4

Total time: 3 hours, 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 Tbs McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning (or any steak seasoning of choice)
  • 1 1/2 cups flour, divided
  • 1 1/2 lbs steak, cut into 2 1/2″ x 1/4″ strips
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups oil for frying

DIRECTIONS

  • In a large bowl, beat together the egg, buttermilk, grill seasoning, and ½ cup flour until smooth.
  • Add the beef and toss until well coated.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to marinate.
  • In another large bowl, sift remaining 1 cup flour with the garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Remove the steak strips and let excess marinade drip off, then dredge them in the flour mixture.
  • Place on a baking sheet (making sure they don’t touch) and freeze until firm, about 1 hour.
  • Heat oil to 370 degrees F in a deep fryer or cast-iron skillet.
  • Drop a few steak strips into the oil at a time and fry until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  • Drain the fried steak strips on a plate lined with paper towels.
  • Season with more salt and pepper before serving with fry sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite steak sauce!

NOTES

  • Pre-cut stir-fry steak strips are already a great size for this and is generally cheaper than whole steaks. I used those and cube steak, and both turned out great!
  • When frying in batches, keep the unused steak strips in the freezer so they don’t thaw out.
